How to Replace a Football Bladder: Step-by-Step Guide

A football that goes soft between uses may have a leaking bladder, a valve issue, or a puncture. This guide walks through a careful bladder replacement on a repairable leather football. Before you begin, check that the replacement bladder and repair kit match your ball’s size and construction. If the ball is valuable, unfamiliar, or has damaged lacing holes or leather, professional repair is the safer call.

What You’ll Need

  • A compatible replacement bladder and football repair tools
  • A clean work surface with good lighting
  • A ball pump and pressure gauge

The Poly Football Bladder Repair Kit with Various Lacing Options and Lace Tool is a convenient starting point for a compatible repair. The poly football bladder will fit all football sizes from pee wee up through professional size footballs.

1. Confirm the Leak and Prepare the Ball

Inflate the ball and check whether it loses air over time. Inspect the valve and seams first; a slow leak can come from more than the bladder. Let all air out before opening the lace area. Work slowly, keep small parts together, and avoid cutting or puncturing the outer leather.

2. Open the Lacing Carefully

Carefully loosen and remove the lace if you plan on reusing or simply cut it away so you can access the bladder. Keep the lace and note its orientation if you plan to reuse it.

3. Remove and Compare the Bladder

Ease the old bladder out without pulling hard against the ball’s interior. Compare its shape, valve position, and size with the replacement. The replacement should sit naturally in the ball, with the valve aligned to the opening. Don’t proceed if it appears to be the wrong size or style.

4. Fit the Replacement Bladder

Insert the new bladder gradually, keeping it untwisted and free of folds. Guide the valve through its opening and check that it sits straight and is not caught under the leather or lining. Follow any instructions supplied with your bladder or repair kit. Avoid sharp tools, excessive force, or unapproved adhesives.

5. Close the Ball and Test It

Before relacing, add a small amount of air to help the bladder take shape, then check that it is centered and the valve remains aligned. Let the air back out as needed to lace the ball comfortably. Reinstall the lace using the original pattern, keeping tension even without pinching the leather. Inflate gradually to the pressure recommended by the ball’s manufacturer, then check the ball again later for air loss.

When to Choose Professional Repair

Bladder replacement can be tricky when the lace is damaged, the valve opening is worn, or the bladder is difficult to position. The LBC Football Repair Service for bladder and lacing replacement is an option when you’d rather have the repair handled professionally.

A careful fit, correct replacement part, and even relacing help give a repaired football a better chance of holding air and feeling right in play.
